Actually, I can.

I sang with Preslie in sacrament meeting on Sunday.

Whew. It was terrifying! Back in June, when I got asked to sing with my daughter in church, I actually felt sick. It scared me a lot. I almost backed out. But I wanted to do it just because I was scared to do it. I wanted to prove to myself I could. I wanted to show my kids that I can do hard and scary things. The only thing holding me back is me. The morning of, my armpits sweated gallons. We did pretty good! I'm not a singer in the performing kind of way. I would have rather given a 20 minute talk or played the piano and those things still would have made me nervous. People don't know that I am actually a scaredy cat when it comes to a lot of things. I was really shy when I was young. I didn't go on a roller coaster until I was a teenager. I didn't try water skiing until I was in my 20s. Well, I'm quite friendly and I love roller coasters. Lakes still freak me out, mostly because they're cold and murky, but I always have fun when I go!

A lot of my kids have inherited my anxiety about the new and unfamiliar. But they, too have overcome a lot of their fears and I'm so happy! I payed Mack $20 this summer to cliff jump at the lake. That's a bit extreme, I know, but I wanted him to do it so he would see how fun it was and not be scared. I don't want my kids to hold themselves back from having great experiences!

This past weekend, we vacationed in Logan, Utah. We visited Willow Park Zoo, saw the Clarkston Martin Harris Pageant, hiked Tony Grove in Logan Canyon, and played at Logan Aquatic Center.

We ate a picnic lunch at Tony Grove and then began our hike. It was hot outside and a mile into it, morale was low. Quinn had fallen twice, and the rest of the kids were already "tired". I tried to stay positive and told them how fun and pretty this is, etc. I carried Quinn piggy-back some of the way. The hike to White Pine Lake was 3.8 miles, one way. We got to where the trail starts going down hill (dropping down to the lake) and Dax stayed with Quinn and Hunter and set up a hammock and chilled out while I took Preslie and Mack the rest of the way to the lake. It was another 2 miles to get there. Mack had been the most grumpy up to this point so it surprised me that he decided to push forward (I should never be surprised with this kid; he always does the opposite of what I expect). The trail dropped steeper and I carried Mack some of the way because he started to get an ingrown toenail. We got to White Pine Lake and it was glorious! Mack and Preslie got in the water, of course.

Way too cold for me! It's a mountain lake made up of melted snow, for crying out loud. We started back toward the rest of the gang and Mack was singing and having a great time, then the steep uphill hit, and his mood took a dive. We made it back to Dax and the others and started hiking the rest of the way back. Mack and I ended up running the better part of the way back to the car. The way back was so much quicker and more pleasant! A good attitude makes all the difference; something I was sure to point out to him. Mack and I sat in the car to wait for the others and the first thing he said was, "This was the best day ever." This from the kid who at one point laid down on the trail and said he wasn't going any farther. It was a great experience. Even though we ran out of water, Quinn fell down a dozen times, the kids were hot and tired, and they all thought the hike sucked at one time or another.. at the end, everyone said it was worth it.

The kids loved the Logan Aquatic Center: water slides and a high dive plus the "umbrella of doom". Can't beat a day at a water park. We headed home tired and happy.

Last weekend, I took my kids to my parents' house for my Dad's 70th birthday. My Mom and all my siblings pitched in and got him a nice spotting scope for his hunting rifle. His old scope was 40 years old and needed replaced. I'm excited for him to have a new one! This was a hard birthday for Dad because that week, his brother (my Uncle Norman) died at age 77. It hit a little too close to home for my Dad. He told me that time was slipping away too quickly. He lost his brother and his best friend. I went to the viewing with my parents and had a nice visit with my Aunt Jane. I just love her. She is one of those people that makes you feel like the most important person in the world. She and I sat in the same chair and held hands and visited about Uncle Norman and all the good times. I told her that Mack had been praying for him and her ever since we visited them back in February. She is not a religious gal, but she said that those prayers have helped her. She told me that the night before Norman died, she prayed that he wouldn't have to suffer anymore. Her sweet, unselfish prayer was answered. I can't imagine the hurt of losing my sweetheart. She and Norman have been married for 58 years.

That weekend, I had an interesting confrontation with my brother Matt and his girlfriend. I felt like I needed to stand up to him and I'm not sure why. This is another thing the old, scaredy-cat Tristie would never have done. I love my brother and I want what is best for him and his son and I think he knows that.

Preslie and Hunter got braces on Monday. It has been an adjustment with the tender teeth, thrashed up mouths, and extra long brushing and flossing.

Preslie went to Lagoon with a friend this week and we're all jealous that she got to ride Cannibal. We hit the pool twice this week. It closes for good next weekend. A new pool/rec center is being built and our beloved old pool will become its parking lot.

Quinn graduated from Upstart, her online preschool. She also decided to get brave at the pool and dunk herself under the water, something she's been terrified to do. I love it when my kids decide that they CAN do something. It's frustrating to wait for them to come around, but when they do, it's so cool!

My second grade teacher always told our class that "can't" isn't a word. She said "can't" means, "I don't want to" or "I won't". I believe her. I can do anything I want to do. I choose to do those things that are truly important, even if they are hard or scary.

not to be outdone

My husband also has a new decoration for our house. He is probably more excited (giddy) about his new piece of decor than I am about mine. This past year he went on a successful bear hunt and had his bear made into a rug...
I have to say it is kind of awesome. It looks very real and alive. It is his very first piece of taxidermy and I am positive not his last. He L.O.V.E.S it.
We've had a busy and fun couple of weeks. We took a spur of the moment trip to my parents' house last weekend and also saw 3 bros and a SIL. Quinn LOVED seeing my brothers' dog(s). As anti-pet as I am, Trooper really IS a great dog. Quinn found his bag of dog food in the cupboard and kept putting a tiny handful of food (4 pieces) in Trooper's bowl. Trooper stood there and ate it and then waited for her to put more in. They did this for like 15 minutes. Quinn was in heaven, concentrating so hard and loving seeing the dog chomp up the food she gave him.
The family is doing well. Preslie is growing up before our eyes. She loves clothes, getting good grades, reading, and being on-time for the bus. She also likes to have sleepovers with her bros in each other's rooms.
Hunter is a math whiz, still a mellow homebody, loves video games, Legos, snuggling, and Harry Potter.
Mack is always busy. I spend most of my day thinking of things to keep him active and occupied. He is never content to play toys by himself so we do a lot of projects because I can only play Bakugans with him for so long before I want to throw myself off a bridge. Today we made bean bags together. He pushed the sewing machine pedal while I guided the fabric. Mack and Quinn filled the bags with beans and then I pulled out my bean bag toss game I made for cub scouts.
(thanks for the fabric scraps, Jayce!)
Quinn is becoming more independent and vocal. She loves her Daddy so much! She loves to push buttons, ride piggy-back, go outside, climb on everything, do "tricks" (where she sits down and sticks her leg in the air and wants us to clap), and read and play with anyone. She recently discovered that she fits in Dax's lunch box/cooler and thinks it is so awesome. She gets in there and says, "Tristie" so I will look. I don't know why she calls me my first name but this is the only time she does it.
And me- I enjoy the challenge of keeping up with everyone. It is crazy being a parent to 4 kids. I love creating, Dax, clean house, visitors, staying in my budget, and date nights. I am on track so far with my new years goals which are:
  1. call or visit each sibling once a month. (I will mostly be calling because half of my sibs are out of state. I need to be a better sister!
  2. visit the temple ONCE a MONTH. I hesitate to write this because of my track record in the past year or two. I can do better!
  3. give piano lessons to my kids once a week. The weeks go by very quickly but I can do it.

light of my life

Look how stinking cute my baby is. Holy Moley. She makes me happy. And so does this weather we enjoyed last week.

Here is my Mother's Day snapshot. Two out of five with eyes open... I'll take it.

I had Quinn dressed so cute for church and 5 minutes into Sacrament meeting, she blew out. Luckily I had an extra one of Mack's dress shirts in my bag, and it just happened to be pink. Mother's Day came around at the perfect time as this Mama has been a tad burnt out lately. The kids were sweet to me and Dax spoiled me with yummy meals and even did dishes. It was GREAT.

slumber party minus the slumber

Dax and I don't allow our kids to have sleepovers, not at their friends' and not here either. We don't want tired and cranky kids the next day, but really it is to protect them. They were really complaining about it a couple weeks ago so I suggested that we have a party. We can play games and watch a movie and hang out; we'll do everything that is fun about a sleepover, but then our friends will go home to sleep.

They had a ton of fun, and they were still ornery the next day from staying up too late, but I was happy to reach a compromise.

Hair-ray for friends!

I am grateful for all who have given me support and hair advice! It really lifted my spirits to have so many friends stop by and offer encouragement. It felt like I had all my girlfriends over for a chat. I have decided for now that I will not go super short in this stage of my life. Not only does my belly get large during pregnancy, my nose also gets especially round. And one talent of big hair is distraction from the pregnant nose. I will go shorter, but I will save extra short and sassy for when my size is closer to normal...like this winter when I need a pick-me-up.

I leave you now with some various pics...

Our neighbor's cat had kittens and Mack loved handling them.

That little kitten is just too cute; it makes me want to punch it in the face.

I don't know how it happened, but one evening my kids rubbed my feet for like a long time! wow. No one can understand how good that feels to me. (I just noticed Mack in the background of this pic looking at the bag of cotton balls, the wheels just turning in that 2-year-old head..)

Bro and Abbey are new homeowners! We love their house and can't wait to stay with them when it is all remodeled! Yay!

We visited my parents last weekend. Here are the kids eating their favorite thing at Grandma's...Bean Soup! (as in Campbell's Bean with Bacon) My Mom is in the background sewing and sewing for the wedding. Fun to see her on fire about this project.

She is a wonderful Grandma and my kids just love her. She is also a wonderful Mom. She is so willing and happy to take the kids while I run all my city errands. Dax and I haven't been to Salt Lake together for a long time and had fun shopping without the kiddos.

Dax promised Hunter a father and son's campout. It got cold and windy so we ended up cooking foil dinners at home in the oven, roasting marshmallows outside, and they slept in a tent in the basement.

Hunter class each sent a Flat Stanley to various locations to see all the places he would go. Hunter's Stanley went to my sister Trina in Oregon and she sent tons of fun info, pictures, and goodies to Hunter's Kindergarten class. She has just recently vacayed in Hawaii, so she also sent stuff about Hawaii for them, too. She is the queen of hooking people up.

And Dax has gotten really into smoking meat lately. It is one hobby I can support wholeheartedly!
Here are some ribs he did for Sunday dinner..

There is something so manly and sexy about a guy cooking. I love to watch my husband cook. I mostly love eating afterward.

memorable St. Patty's Day

Last night Preslie and Hunter set out traps so they could catch a Leprechaun. It cracked me up! Preslie's trap was a jar with a potato inside to lure the little guy. Hunter's trap was a shiny shamrock coin under a precariously balanced box. They went to bed excited as if it was Christmas Eve.

Dax and I woke up this morning to shouts from the other room...

"Hunter's trap is down!"
"There's a leprechaun hat in here!"
"Look at the jelly beans in my jar!"

Confused, I dragged myself out of bed to find a green hat with prizes and candy inside, green jelly beans in the place of Preslie's potato, and Hunter's trap down to suggest that a Leprechaun was inside. The kids did NOT know what to do. They were freaking out trying to decide if they should lift the box or not. Then we turned the box and saw a Leprechaun-shaped hole in the side...

As Hunter was getting ready for school he said, "We'll probably have a St. Patrick's Day party at school today."

"I don't think so, buddy. St. Patrick's Day isn't that big of a holiday," I said. Considering the events of the past 20 minutes, I knew he didn't believe me.

After school, Preslie came home with a cute shamrock she'd made.

She didn't know how lucky she really was because it is indeed a GIRL!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from all SIX of us!

January re-cap

The New Year has started out great with Preslie getting baptized, Dax's bison project (which has still not been completed due to the insane amount of snow here), and us surviving another month of pure, torturous, freezing COLD. Some other things worth mentioning:

This sweet note between Hunter and Dax written during sacrament meeting today...

Seeing some family..

Matt and Abbey came to see us and that always means a couple of things:
  • Dax cooking good food for everyone
  • chocolate e'clairs
Most of all, seeing the kids play together is cool; I love to see my kids build relationships with their cousins. Mya is at the age that she can really interact with my kids and it is fun! I never had cousins my age growing up so it is important to me that my kids are good buddies with their cousins and also their aunts and uncles.
More time with family...

Preslie and Hunter got all their Valentines ready a month early for their big V-day parties at school. A little excited? Yes!

Everyone has been hounding me this month to make chocolate chip cookies all the time. Mack has been the most relentless. He mentions it 5-6 times a day at least. He loves to make them even more than eat them, I think.

I took the kids to temple square for a short visit to see the big statue of Christ. Sad to be that close to my parents and not have time to drop in. We had fun, though.

And last-- We finally got the last of Preslie's medical bills payed off! YAY!

Good-bye January, Hello month of Love! 28 days 'til my birthday!

be jealous (viewer discretion advised)...

because THIS--------->
is what's in my garage!

Guess the animal this skull belongs to.

If you said "Bison" or "Buffalo" you are correct. Dax got his Dad a Bison hunt on Ute Tribe land as a thank you for building our house. In my opinion, a thousand pound dead buffalo carcus is hardly payment for my beautiful home, but they had a great time.

Here is the spot...and the shot.

And finally, the kill! (or the "harvest" if you want to be P.C.)

And these are the hands that hugged me after he got home!

Just for fun, this is what Mack has been into the past 2 days. He put a lot of work into this.

And tonight, the kids and I hung out while Dax was working in the mountains. They played their best game of Battleship ever. I supervised a little, but they are really getting it down! I am so happy to have kids that can play games! My hubby doesn't like the competition. Makes him want to punch somebody.

Happy Weekend!

in the thick of it

No one would ever believe the serenade my husband gave me last night. ALL night. Snoring, I mean. I almost didn't believe it myself. It was so loud and so impressive that I found myself saying "Wow" out loud several times throughout the night. Of course, I wasn't bugged. He is sick; we all are. And if I hadn't been battling a severe fever and chills, I'd have gotten up and found a tape recorder. It's too bad because I know he would have thanked me.

Here is a pic of my kids after school, collapsed on the couch with 102 degree fevers. A huge sorry to their classmates.

We have been sick way too much the past month, but this one wins the award for meanest virus. Pretty sure it is some kind of 'flu. But that is a lame thing to blog about so here are some happys from the past couple weeks...

I am giddy that our storage room is completed!

And here she is with all the kids' clothes we own adorning the shelves..

I called my Mom to tell her the great news. She said, "I get excited about storage rooms!" I knew she would be happy for me!

That same weekend, we painted the inside of our garage and all of our exterior doors.

And Dax turned into our hero when he came home from his trip and took care of the 4 of us. Hunter pretty much summed up how things were going when he said, "Hey, Dad. Can you get Mack some breakfast 'cause I'm tired of getting breakfast for him."
Dax also brought home a 38 lb pumpkin from the grocery store to lift our spirits.
This little boy was at the height of his glory: on the table, making messes, and nobody stopping him!
